Installing the Helper

August 19, 2026David MeentsGuides

The helper is a small program that runs in your system tray while you play. It reads the game's log file and sends your level-ups, zone changes, and deaths to your account, so your character stays up to date without you doing anything. It never touches the game itself.

Setup takes about five minutes.

1. Open the Helper page

Sign in and go to Account → Helper, or open poeoverlord.com/account/helper. Pick your operating system at the top of the Create New Key card. Everything else on the page adjusts to match.

2. Download and run it

Use the Download card to get the file for your platform. It's a plain archive, not an installer.

  • Windows: extract the .zip somewhere in your own files, such as your Documents folder, and double-click poeoverlord-helper.exe. Windows will probably show a SmartScreen warning the first time. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
  • Linux: extract the .tar.gz somewhere you own, such as your home folder or ~/.local/bin — avoid /opt or /usr/local/bin, since the helper updates itself in place and needs write access to its own folder. Then open poeoverlord-helper. If your file manager won't run it, right-click it, open Properties, and allow it to run as a program.

Run it once. It writes an example config file, prints where it saved it, and exits. That's expected: without a key there's nothing it can do, so it won't stay running or appear in your tray until step 4. Make a note of the path it printed.

3. Create a key

Back on the Helper page, give the key a name like "Gaming PC" and click Create.

Check that the two path fields match your install before you copy anything. On Linux, replace the ~ in each path with your home directory, as in /home/yourname/..., because the helper doesn't expand it. If your game isn't in the default place, the Windows and Linux guides say where to look.

Expand config.toml under the form and copy the whole block. The key is only shown once, so if you lose it, delete it and make another.

4. Paste the config

Open the config file the helper made in step 2, at the path it printed. Replace everything in it with the block you copied, and save.

Now launch the helper again. This time it stays running and appears in your system tray, where Open config and Open logs are available from its menu if you need them later.

The dot turns green when it connects. The Status card on the Helper page flips to connected at the same time.

5. Play

Launch Path of Exile 2. Your first zone change shows up on your dashboard within a few seconds, and from then on the helper keeps everything current in the background.

If the dot isn't green

  • Red means the site rejected the key. Check that the api_key line in your config matches the value the site gave you, with nothing extra around it. If in doubt, delete the key on the site, create a new one, and paste the config again.
  • Amber means the helper is running but can't reach the site. It usually clears on its own. If it doesn't, check your internet connection and any firewall or VPN.
  • Green, but nothing appears on the site almost always means the helper is looking at the wrong log file. The fix depends on your platform: Windows details or Linux details.

Those two posts also cover where the helper keeps its files, how updates work on each platform, and every problem reported so far.
